Multiple Fatalities in Shooting in Fredericton, New Brunswick

One person has been arrested in relation to the shooting.

At about 8.45am, police said that they had one suspect in custody.

The circumstances of the shooting in the capital of New Brunswick province, home to about 60,000 people, were not immediately clear.

They're also asking people to refrain from calling the police station because of the high volume of calls.

Police asked residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Robert DiDiodato, who lives near the scene of the incident, said he heard a series of "firecracker" noises at about 7 a:m., CBC reported.

A follow-up message later confirmed that police were dealing with "multiple fatalities" along Brookside Drive on the north side of the city.

Tim Morehouse, another resident of the complex, said he heard someone shout: "Shut up!" 'It was sort of like a pop, pop, pop, pop'.

Police said there is no further threat and people do not need to remain locked down. They had previously warned the public not to expose the whereabouts of police as they worked to address the situation.

He says his apartment complex has four buildings in a square, and it sounded like the shots were coming from the middle of the complex.

"My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning's shooting".

Last month, a gunman walked down a busy Toronto street, killing two people and wounding 13 others before turning his weapon on himself.
