"The ship was monitored and was intercepted in accordance with worldwide law", the military said in a statement, before the vessel, named Freedom for Gaza and carrying 12 people, was taken to the Israeli port of Ashdod.

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army said that it shelled a Hamas post in response to firing from the Palestinian enclave that targeted Israeli troops.

"The resistance can not allow the occupation to impose a policy of bombing sites and targeting fighters without paying the price", it said in a statement. One Israeli soldier was killed by a Gaza sniper during this period.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the incident was "expected to destroy Egypt and the UN's efforts to achieve a long-term ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas.

A video released by the Israeli military shows two men in a watchtower, said to be in northern Gaza, and puffs of smoke as one appears to open fire.

Israel has fought three wars with Palestinian militants in Gaza since 2008 and says the blockade is necessary to keep them from obtaining weapons or materials that could be used for military purposes.

Tensions have escalated since late March, when Hamas launched what would become regular mass protests along Israel's perimeter fence with Gaza.

The sides have been engaged in months of border violence.

The first half of 2018 has been deadly for Palestinian children, with at least 35 children killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, according to Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP).
