Calling Boris Johnson Islamophobic for criticising the burka is preposterous

Mughal criticised the "sheer flippancy" of Johnson's comments and criticised the Tory chairman, Brandon Lewis, for not doing more to tackle Islamophobia in the party.

Johnson said he opposed banning burkas, but wrote that it was "absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes".

He didn't think Britain should ban the veils in public places, as Denmark has done, but said they were "absolutely ridiculous".

"These are the kind of comments we have seen that have been made by extremist far-right groups and people who have been maliciously attacking Muslims, so clearly it does fit that bracket", he said.

Alistair Burt, the minister of state for the Middle East, who worked under the former foreign secretary, said he would never have made such a comment.

Mr Lewis announced he agreed with Mr Burt in a Tweet calling on the former London mayor to say sorry.

He said he felt "fully entitled" to expect women to remove face coverings when talking to him at his MP surgery - and schools and universities should be able to take the same approach if a student "turns up. looking like a bank robber".

Friends insisted he was making a liberal case against the United Kingdom following countries like Denmark, France, Germany and Austria in imposing a ban on wearing the burka or niqab in public places.

"The Prime Minister is in denial".

A contrite Mr Johnson insisted that he had meant no harm and apologised "unreservedly" if he had offended Ms Thornberry's feelings.

But he said: "Such restrictions are not quite the same as telling a free-born adult woman what she may or may not wear, in a public place, when she is simply minding her own business".
