José Mourinho does not expect any Manchester United deadline-day signings

All permanent signings must be completed by the August 9 deadline, but clubs can still sign players on standard loan deals until August 31 at 5pm.

Somehow, though, it appears the stakeholders didn't account for the World Cup.

Juergen Klopp's side, bolstered by the likes of Brazil keeper Alisson from AS Roma, compatriot Fabinho and fellow midfielder Guinean Naby Keita, are the most likely to close the gap on City who won the title by 19 points last season.

Whatever the explanation, the lack of new faces compounds issues surrounding the United squad heading into the Premier League season.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he is "not confident" of signing another player before Thursday's transfer deadline at 17:00 BST.

Mauricio Pochettino claiming it is "advantage Newcastle", what with us having nobody in the later stages of this summer's competition. "The manager now wants us to try and take a bit more control of the game, to try and dominate possession a little bit more", Kasper Schmeichel told the club website.

Mourinho even defended Sanchez after the forward cut a frustrated figure in Manchester United's 4-1 defeat by Liverpool in a friendly in the US.

The Red Devils coach has cut a sullen figure throughout pre-season with the former Chelsea boss unable to hide his dissatisfaction with Brazil worldwide midfielder Fred being his sides only high profile signing. "Next season, after pre-season, after being comfortable and adapted, he's going to be great for us".

"They identified a target - he didn't really play in the World Cup and had no impact - but they were well prepared and wanting to buy him before then".

Despite most experts saying the opposite, Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer has suggested that Mourinho's side will get closer to Manchester City this season.

Pochettino, who takes his side to Newcastle United for their first Premier League match of the season on Saturday, added that having club captain Hugo Lloris return to the club as a World Cup victor can help build a winning mentality at Tottenham.

"I think this was a chance that we didn't want to lose and we made it". We asked our readers to give their predictions for the new Premier League season, and they did not disappoint.
