Mind the gap: Cyclist ignores bridge warning at her peril

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has just released CCTV footage capturing the near-tragedy, and it should serve as a strong warning to all cyclists: when the barrier is down, that means you're not to supposed to go through.

She ignored flashing safety barriers that had been lowered to prevent traffic passing, and kept cycling even though the bridge was clearly rising, ABC 2 reported.

Police say a bicyclist who weaved past the gates blocking access to a bridge over a river in eastern Wisconsin escaped serious injury after falling into the gap that was created when the bridge started to rise.

As the video continues, the woman and her bike disappear in the gap between the road and the raised bridge.

'The barriers are meant to stop vehicles and bicycles and she actually ended up striking one of them with her arm as she went through. She then rode right into the crack in the bridge, getting stuck until passersby helped her out.

The woman suffered facial injuries-- but did not fall into the water.

The 37-year-old Menasha woman was riding her bike around 10 p.m. on the Fourth of July, CBS affiliate WFRV reports.
