Trump hails Boris Johnson as ‘a friend’

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit minister David Davis on Monday quit in protest at the plan stirring talk of a leadership challenge and sending sterling tumbling more than a cent. Brexit meant Brexit, but now it appears Brexit means remaining subject to European laws.

Boris Johnson has been a friend of the president, was a friend during the election and he has a warm and close relationship with the president.

One would require a new law to join a new customs union, and another would demand the EU collect any tariffs set by Britain on UK-bound goods coming in from outside.

"We need to rise to the challenge and grasp the opportunities", Brexit minister Dominic Raab, appointed on Monday after the resignation of David Davis, is expected to say in the foreword of the document.

However the Daily Mail reported that Mr Rees-Mogg said Mr Johnson would make a "brilliant" prime minister.

Mrs May is pressing on with her Brexit plan, shrugging off the resignations of two senior ministers and the anger of eurosceptic lawmakers in her Conservative Party who have accused her of betraying her pledge of a clean break with the EU.

Ms. May has faced a backlash over the plan from Brexit hardliners in her Conservative Party, who say it gives too many concessions to the European Union, but she has support from moderates and there has been no formal challenge to her leadership.

Johnson, a polarising figure and a former mayor of London, was a leading spokesperson for the campaign calling for Britain's departure from the European Union in advance of a June 2016 referendum.

He said the British position is now "a basis for a real negotiation now and what we haven't had for many months is a clear negotiating position".

That is more than the 48 required to trigger a no-confidence vote in May, if unhappy MPs were to lodge a formal objection with the chair of the party's backbench 1922 committee.

Labour's deputy leader, Tom Watson, mocked the former foreign secretary, saying he had "a career ahead of him on Love Yourself Island". The Conservatives now have 316 MPs so 48 of them would need to write such letters to challenge May.

In the immediate aftermath of the Cabinet signing up to Theresa May's soft Brexit strategy on Friday, the odds of a Conservative leadership contest in 2018 were 2/1.

The vision for future U.K. -EU economic ties will be detailed in a so-called "white paper" today that the government is scheduled to publish.

It would compel the United Kingdom government to agree in law to a commitment in applying the same customs terms to Northern Ireland as to the rest of the United Kingdom post-Brexit.

One disgruntled Tory MP even declined an invitation to watch England's World Cup semi-final clash with Croatia at 10 Downing Street because of his unhappiness with Mrs May's Brexit plans.
