FFA target Peter Crouch as A-League marquee after Fernando Torres rejection

The move comes after Torres chose to join J-League strugglers Sagan Tosu instead of coming Down Under, with Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory keen to sign the former Atletico Madrid hitman.

The 34-year-old has been linked with Japanese side Sagan Tosu and MLS outfit Chicago Fire with it expected that he will leave Europe for the first time, as confirmed by his father in June when he said: "I am sure it won't be in Europe, it will be a long way away".

The FFA will now turn their attention to former England worldwide and Premier League veteran Crouch.

But the prolific marksman has rejected the opportunity to continue plying his trade on European soil and made a decision to cut his teeth in the Japan Professional Football League with relegation strugglers Sagan Tosu.

Sagan Tosu has been in Japan's top flight J.League since 2012.

The Spaniard scored 126 goals in 314 matches in an eight-year spell in England, his best years coming at Liverpool where he netted 81 times in 142 games to become an Anfield hero.

Despite a bold bid from FFA negotiators, and AAP is reporting that the former Liverpool, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid star has opted against a move to Australia.

"I have had offers from France, Germany and even one from Spain, but at no point did I ever think about going to another European team".

Fernando Torres will reveal the next stop in his illustrious career on Tuesday, with a move to Major League Soccer or the A-League two likely destinations.
