China Rebuffs Trump’s Blame in North Korea Denuclearization Fallout

While Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying described criticism of China's meddling in North Korea's relationship with the United States as coming from an unspecified "some people", President Donald Trump levied that exact criticism against China on Monday, speculating on Twitter that China "may be exerting negative pressure" on North Korea's communist dictator Kim Jong-un.

Trump faced a backlash for scrapping the drills, with critics saying he gave in too readily to Kim's request to halt the exercises while getting little in terms of tangible commitments from Pyongyang in return.

"The Chinese side has been stressing that we hope that the DPRK and the USA can strengthen dialogue and consultation, follow through on the consensus and outcomes of the summit in Singapore and move forward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", Hua told reporters Monday.

Pompeo was reportedly promised a meeting with Kim, but Kim appears to have toured a potato farm instead, according to pictures released by North Korean media. Kim Jong-un vowed to push forward with the "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" in a statement signed alongside President Trump, but never clarified what that statement meant. The two held a historic summit in Singapore on June 12.

Despite the secretary's attempt to put a positive spin on the visit, as soon as he was out of the country, North Korea criticized his "unilateral and gangster-like" demands and called the talks "regrettable". "But, it seems that the US misunderstood our goodwill and patience".

North Korea leader Kim Jung Un has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Pyongyang in September for National Day celebrations in a bid to strengthen economic ties.

South Korea said on Tuesday it has chose to scrap an annual government mobilization drill this year as part of a suspended joint exercise with the United States but will carry out its own drills to maintain readiness.The ministers of safety and defense made the announcement at a media briefing on Tuesday.

He added that Trump has won the "face" as the peacemaker, but will require China to deliver the "lining" on denuclearization as Beijing has a bigger say in awarding Pyongyang economic gains.

The Trump administration's latest announcement to slap tariffs on an extra $200 billion of Chinese imports has sparked an outcry from China, whose commerce ministry said on Wednesday the USA move is "unacceptable" and hurts America's own interests, China and the rest of the world.

Trump told reporters Tuesday that he might have another gift for Kim as well.
