Woolies, Aldi and IGA recall frozen vegetables over deadly listeria fears

More than 200 people died in a major listeriosis outbreak in South Africa that was linked to Enterprise factories producing cold meats.

A person has died from a strain of listeria similar to one that triggered a recall of popular brands of frozen vegetables across Australia, but it is not possible to confirm a direct link to one of the products, the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services (DHSS) says.

While cooking destroys the listeria bacteria, Woolworths's caution is unsurprising after a devastating outbreak of listeriosis in SA in 2017 claimed 191 lives.

Hence six of our supermarkets - Aldi, Iceland, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose - recalling vast quantities of their bagged-up frozen veg. People who are immunocompromised like HIV/Aids patients, elderly people, pregnant women and children are affected by Listeriosis.

Customers are being advised not to eat them, and instead return them to the store in exchange for a refund. Symptoms in humans include gastroenteritis and flu-like symptoms.

The European Food Safety Authority said there had been 47 cases including nine deaths since an outbreak in Europe in 2015 linked to the affected vegetables.

A New Zealand Countdown spokesperson said in a statement it was aware of one product it stocked, Bell Farms Steam Veggies Carrot, Corn and Broccoli 3pk 450g, which was at risk.

"The Frozen Savoury Rice Mix product is uncooked and frozen and so requires cooking before consumption".

Around 50 products have been withdrawn from sale by Greenyard Frozen UK Ltd as a precaution, amid fears they may contain listeria monocytogenes which can cause sickness and diarrhoea.

ALDI - Only products with country of origin of Belgium, United Kingdom or Hungary.
