PGA Tour to bring tournament to Detroit Golf Club in June 2019

PGA Tour to bring tournament to Detroit Golf Club in June 2019

The decision to remove Boston as an annual stop was one of many as the PGA Tour trimmed the schedule by one to 46 tournaments and the playoffs from four events to three to avoid the start of college football and the NFL.

The PGA agreed to a 7-year contract to have the TPC Twin Cities in Blaine host the 3M Open.

It marks the first time the PGA Tour has hosted a tournament in Detroit's city limits and will be the first PGA event in the state since the defunct Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc 1958-2009. It also marks the return of a premier PGA Tour event to MI for the first time since the Buick Open wrapped up in Grand Blanc in 2009.

This year's Tour Championship ends September 23.

The equal payout for the men and women earned the attention of the LPGA Tour members, whose financial compensation in the competitive and corporate spheres lag far behind their PGA Tour brethren.

"We are extremely pleased with the way the schedule has come together, particularly with the number of changes that were involved and the strength of the partnerships required to achieve this new look", said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan in a release. "This will enhance the visibility of the FedEx Cup playoffs and overall fan engagement with the PGA Tour and the game as a whole". Top players then go straight to Tennessee for the FedEx Cup Invitational, a World Golf Championship in Memphis that replaces the event held at Firestone in Ohio. Puerto Rico is slotted for February 18-24, the same week as the WGC-Mexico Championship. The Players Championship takes its new date in March and is followed by the Valspar Championship, giving Florida a swing of four consecutive events.

After the RBC Heritage and Zurich Classic of New Orleans comes the Wells Fargo Championship.

All three tournaments will be played over consecutive weeks, starting with the Northern Trust from Aug 8-11 and finishing with the Tour Championship from Aug 22-25.

Houston and Greenbrier are to return to the fall portion of the schedule in 2019.
