"Gritty" Joker Origin Movie With Joaquin Phoenix Confirmed

Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly closed his deal to play The Joker in a standalone Warner Bros. film, which now has the greenlight to start production in September, per THR. Shooting reportedly starts in September in NY.

There is speculation that it will also have a quick turnaround and may be in cinemas as early as late 2019.

Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover trilogy, will be helming the new movie, having co-written the screenplay with Scott Silver. No release date has yet been set for the still-untitled movie.

There are also rumours that the tone will be more akin to that of a crime drama, rather than something more formulaic typically found in the genre. " This description, coupled with reports that DC has multiple Joker films in development, leads to the burning question: Who, exactly, is this "cautionary tale" for?"

The budget is also significantly lower than most "superhero" films at around $55million.

Phoenix's Joker however will be a separate standalone interpretation on the character, which isn't connected to the DC universe depicted in Justice League and Suicide Squad. Joker fatigue is a possibility for audiences, but it depends on how the films differentiate from each other, and when each one arrives in theaters. Joaquin Phoenix is an exciting actor, and if he was intrigued enough to say yes to this project we'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
