Who is Brett Kavanaugh, Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee?

By keeping Scalia's seat open, McConnell gave Trump a head start in putting his own stamp on the high court, and the president acknowledged as much when Gorsuch was sworn in a year ago.

"Throughout legal circles, he is considered a judge's judge, a true thought leader among his peers", Trump said of Kavanaugh.

The president added: "There is no one in America more qualified for this position and no one more deserving".

FreedomWorks, the conservative advocacy group, issued a statement applauding Trump for choosing Judge Kavanaugh.

In his 12 years on the D.C. Circuit, Judge Kavanaugh has demonstrated a devotion to legal text and constitutional principle.

He is also an enemy of former President Bill Clinton after he investigated his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Brett Kavanaugh, who has been nominated by Donald Trump to fill the vacant seat on the US Supreme Court, is a pillar of the Republican legal establishment who earned the nickname "Forrest Gump" after being involved in a series of moments of huge import in modern American history. He has repeatedly affirmed that judges serve not as the champions of faction, but as the readers of laws and adjudicators of disputes. It is also his second nomination since becoming president. Brett's mother Martha Gamble served as a Maryland state Circuit Court Judge from 1995 to 2001.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey commended Trump on the nomination of Kavanaugh.

Prior to being tapped by Trump, some conservatives questioned Kavanaugh's bona fides, and he's controversial with Democrats because of his role in the Starr investigation of Clinton.

With Democrats determined to vigorously oppose Trump's choice, the Senate confirmation battle is expected to dominate the months leading up to November's midterm elections.

Republicans hold a mere 50-49 Senate majority, with the prolonged absence of the ailing Arizona GOP Sen. Democratic senators running for re-election in states Trump carried in 2016 will face pressure to back his nominee. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said the Senate will vote on the court nominee in the fall. Some Republican senators had favored other options.

"We look forward to supporting Kavanaugh throughout the confirmation process". At least two of them turned down White House invitation to attend the announcement ceremony as did all Democrats. Feinstein is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for confirmation. Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, who have shown concern in the past about preserving access to abortion rights.

The conservative Judicial Crisis Network made clear Monday they consider this fight even more substantial than the one to confirm Justice Neil Gorsuch. At the top of that list is abortion. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case. He has written roughly 300 opinions as a judge, authored several law journal articles, regularly taught law school classes and spoken frequently in public. Kavanaugh's views on presidential power and abortion are expected to draw particular attention in his confirmation hearing. White House counsel Don McGahn's office is overseeing the effort. Kavanaugh noted that it was his mother-a former public school teacher who went to law school and became a judge-who inspired him to follow in her lawyering footsteps and will always be the only "Judge Kavanaugh" in his mind.

He dissented from a ruling that let an undocumented immigrant teenager get an abortion while in federal custody.

It may not also be his last, with liberal Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg 85-years-old and Stephen Breyer turning 80 next month.
