Rockets Determined to Sign Carmelo Anthony

The departure appears to be the another domino to fall in the Rockets' impending pursuit of Carmelo Anthony, who is expected to receive a buyout of his contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Anthony opted into the final year of his near $28m deal last month, contributing to a dangerously-inflated payroll that now sits at around $310m in OKC.

The Houston Rockets could use some depth in their front court now that they have lost both Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in free agency, and they are reportedly aiming high to fill that need.

The moves add to uncertainty for the Rockets around Swiss free agent center Clint Capela, who has not agreed to a new deal.

Mbah a Moute spent the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons with the Clippers before joining the Rockets last season.

James's Los Angeles Lakers could also offer Anthony a possible way out of Oklahoma while remaining Banana Boat buddy Wade would also relish the chance to play alongside the former Denver Nugget in South Beach. The 31-year-old averaged 7.5 points, three rebounds, and 1.2 steals in 25.6 minutes per game across 61 games (15 starts) in Houston.

"We are very excited to bring Avery back to the Clippers", president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank said in a statement.

As for Houston, by signing Anthony as a free agent, presumably for the veteran's minimum, it stands to get a bargain scorer the Thunder failed to fully unlock last season.
