Cockpit fire likely caused 2016 EgyptAir crash

Sixty-six passengers and crew died when the Egyptair flight from Paris to Cairo crashed into the south-eastern Mediterranean on May 19, 2016.

Egyptian investigators have yet to publish the final report on the 2016 crash.

But an official Egyptian probe in 2016 suggested the plane operating flight MS804 had been bombed, saying traces of explosives had been found on the remains of those killed.

"The most likely hypothesis is that a fire broke out in the cockpit while the aeroplane was flying at its cruise altitude and that the fire spread rapidly resulting in the loss of control", a BEA news release said. It is unusual for investigators to comment publicly on a case being led by their counterparts in another country.

Officials recovered flight recorders that were analyzed two months after the crash because advanced fix work was needed first, the new report from investigators with France's Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety, known as BEA said.

The BEA said the crew could be heard discussing a fire on the cockpit voice recorder and that the plane's automatic ACARS messaging system had flagged up smoke on board. In this meeting, the Egyptian authorities explained that as it had been determined that there had been a malicious act, the investigation now fell within the sole jurisdiction of the judicial authorities.

The Egyptian Public prosecution said in a statement sent to journalists it was still conducting its investigation into the crash "in full cooperation with the French investigation side".

"The BEA's Egyptian counterpart did not publish the final report which would have allowed the BEA to set out its differences of opinion as authorized by the global provisions". Onboard the liner there were 66 people, among whom were citizens of Egypt, France, UK, Canada.

The BEA urged Egyptian prosecutors to investigate the possibility it was an accidental fire, to prevent such accidents in the future.
