Billy Dee Williams to Reprise Role as Lando Calrissian in Episode IX

The man who originated the charismatic character almost four decades ago is reportedly headed back to that far away galaxy for Star Wars: Episode IX, the upcoming installment in the blockbuster franchise. Of course, the character was also impeccably played by Donald Glover just a few months ago in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Sources confirm to The Hollywood Reporter that Williams will indeed be returning to the Star Wars big screen for the first time since 1983s Return of the Jedi.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film will star Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian and Keri Russell in a now unnamed role. The character made his suave debut in Empire Strikes Back.

Williams's most recent film was 2017's The Lego Batman Movie, where he voiced Harvey Dent, the lawyer who becomes supervillain Two-Face - a character he had previously played in Tim Burton's live-action Batman (1989).

The film, directed by J.J. Abrams, is set for release December 20, 2019, with filming expected to start soon. Keri Russell is one of the new additions to the cast.

Given the tragic death of Carrie Fisher after The Last Jedi, and the fact that Episode IX was supposed to focus on her character General Leia Organa, we would be entirely without original trilogy characters if Lando didn't return.
