Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg overtakes Warren Buffett as world's third richest person

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now the third richest man in the world, overtaking Warren Buffett on Bloomberg's list of the world's richest people.

The 34-year-old now trails behind Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, taking over the third spot from Buffett on Friday, Bloomberg reported. Facebook allowed political strategy firm Cambridge Analytica - which helped Donald Trump's campaign - to harvest the private data of 87 million users.

Investor and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Buffett, who used to be the richest person alive (and is now No. 4), has been slipping because of his massive charitable contributions. "This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time". The report noted that this is the first time when the three wealthiest people on the list built their huge wealth in the field of technology.

As per a Fortune report, investors are loving Facebook and are happy at the news that Facebook has made its biggest sports streaming deal yet with the Premier League.

Facebook's stocks, despite the fallout over the data-privacy crisis, are now at a record high of $203.23.

Tech-created fortunes comprise about 20% of the $5 trillion in wealth tracked by Bloomberg's index, the most of any industry sector.

Buffet himself has also bet on tech. He's donated about 290 million Berkshire Hathaway Class B shares to charities, most of it to Gates's foundation. Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have pledged to give away 99 percent of their Facebook stock over their lifetimes.
