David Davis, British Brexit Secretary, resigns: United Kingdom media reports

Her proposal sparked the fury of hardline Brexiteers in the Conservative Party but Mr Davis signalled Brussels itself could still reject it.

His unhappiness in government has been no secret for some time, but after the prime minister's Chequers agreement with cabinet ministers to pursue closer ties with the European Union than he desired, he found his position untenable.

The appointment comes after Davis resigned overnight, saying he would be unable to deliver the PM's post-Brexit trade strategy - which was approved by the cabinet on Friday - as he did not "believe" in it.

After a visit to Downing Street on Sunday he concluded that he had no choice but to walk.

Former MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson has left his role as a special adviser in the Government following the surprise resignation of the Brexit Secretary.

Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg said a "large number" of his colleagues would vote against the plan which he told LBC Radio "would not deliver Brexit".

The vast majority of Tory MPs, although far from happy with the current state of May's government, are not yet convinced that the solution is to replace the prime minister.

He told the BBC a contest would take three months and "we physically do not have the time for that" given the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union next March and both sides want a Brexit deal by October.

The BBC's political editor Laura Kuenssberg said Mr Johnson's exit had turned an "embarrassing and hard situation for the PM into potentially a full-blown crisis". Michael Gove, May's environment minister, said on Sunday that while the agreed negotiating stance was not ideal, he believed it delivered on handing back control to Britain. He said his resignation was "not imminent" but refused to rule it out. At that point, pro-Brexit Conservatives could vote against the agreement, potentially bringing down the government and throwing the last stage of talks into chaos.

Meanwhile, some Remain-supporting politicians said the resignation was evidence of the need for a second referendum.

So why did Davis resign, what does it mean for the future of Brexit negotiations and can May now survive?

The European Union has played down talk by Britain's Brexit minister that last week's interim accord is not binding and will launch new talks on Friday (15 December) that are "David Davis-proof", a senior EU official said.

The Independent adds, "Davis's resignation allows the Brexit irreconcilables to think that there must be a better way, even if it means leaving the European Union without a deal".

She is set to tell MPs there have been "robust views" on Brexit among cabinet members and is also expected to announce a replacement for Davis.
