Suzuki Jimny launched in Japan

The new fourth-generation Jimny has a tough act to follow. Both the Jimny and the Jimny Sierra are three-door SUVs with the former being shorter by 155mm (3,395mm), narrower by 170mm (1,475mm) and lower to the ground by 5mm (ground clearance of 205mm).

Inside, there's a much more up to date influence with a modern dashboard layout. Suzuki claims that it's still a functional and straightforward environment though, and that the switches are all large enough to operate while wearing gloves. The central console is centred around a seven-inch touchscreen at higher trim levels, which includes Bluetooth and smartphone connectivity. The rear seats fold down flat with the backs covered in plastic to make cleaning them easier when carrying dirty gear.

Just one engine has been confirmed for the European market.

Starting with the Kei-specced Jimny, as the Kei norms in Japan, the vehicle will house a 0.7-litre, three-cylinder 658cc petrol engine that produces a 64PS of max power and 96Nm of maximum torque.

Under the bonnet will be a 1.5-litre petrol engine that produces 100bhp and 130Nm of torque, but despite offering more displacement than the unit found in the previous model, it is 15 per cent lighter to help with fuel efficiency. While no United Kingdom specifics have been finalised yet, Suzuki has revealed that it will have an improved five-speed manual gearbox alongside a four-speed automatic. As measured on outgoing NEDC fuel economy and Carbon dioxide regulations, the new Jimny claims 41.5mpg with the manual box, dipping to 37.6mpg for the auto.

An approach angle of 37 degrees, breakover angle of 28 degrees, and departure angle of 49 degrees is how the little mountain goat from Japan stacks up off the beaten path. While the Suzuki Jimny is priced in Japan from JPY 14,58,000 to JPY 19,06,200 ( ₹ 9.06 lakh - ₹ 11.85 lakh), the Jimny Sierra is priced in the range of JPY 17,60,400 to JPY 20,62,800 JPY ( ₹ 10.94 lakh - ₹ 12.82 lakh) respectively. It also gets three-link rigid axle suspension for off-road agility. On the front of safety features, the new Jimny gets forward braking assist, six airbags, lane departure warning, weaving alert, ESP and ABS.

Full UK equipment and prices will arrive closer to the Jimny going on sale here next year.
