Comcast Xfinity Mobile will throttle your hotspot speeds and lower video resolution

Comcast's "unlimited" plan will also restrict mobile hotspot speeds to 600kbps or less. This can help you save money if you pay By the Gig and take longer to reach the 20 GB threshold if you have the Unlimited data option. Xfinity Mobile customers can now request for an upgrade which will enable them to play 720p video on cellular for free but Comcast will eventually charge an additional monthly fee for HD resolution later this year. Later this year, however, it will charge for 720p streaming, and it reportedly does not have plans to allow 1080p streaming or higher over cellular.

Charter unveiled Spectrum Mobile today, the cable MSO's mobile wireless service. The new Wi-Fi first mobile service looks to be closely following the Xfinity Mobile model, which was also expected. However, Xfinity Mobile announced it is "setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do numerous things they enjoy doing online". The change will only apply when customers are streaming video over cellular data, an important distinction since one of the benefits of Xfinity Mobile is the ability to automatically connect to the company's huge network of Wi-Fi hot spots. For everyone else, the company plans to roll out these changes in the coming weeks. The By the Gig data option will continue to deliver 4G speeds for all data traffic.

720p streaming will soon be offered for an extra fee, but until then, it can be requested free of charge.

On the 600kbps tethering limit, Comcast told customers, "At this speed, you'll conserve data so that it takes longer to reach the 20GB threshold, but you'll still be able to do numerous online activities you enjoy".

Comcast only sells mobile service to customers who subscribe to Comcast home Internet.

Xfinity Mobile, a Mobile Virtual Network Operator owned by Comcast, has announced new restrictions on video quality and hotspot speeds. But the unlimited plan only provides 20GB of full-speed data each month-after 20GB, the plan is limited to 1.5Mbps downstream and 750kbps upstream at all times.
