Light’s insane multi-lens camera system coming to a smartphone

Light showed the Washington Post smartphone prototypes which had rear cameras sporting between 5-9 lenses.

The phone is rumoured to have eight lenses arranged in a circle around a central lens, according to the Washington Post. And the company claims its design can capture 64-megapixel shots, can take better photos in low light and offers advanced depth effects. It would make sense for each lens to have its own unique function, similar to how the triple lens on the Huawei P20 Pro works, and such lenses may include a monochrome lens, a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens. Ten or more of those lenses capture an image at the same time under different focal lengths; the camera stitches those images into a single 52-megapixel photo.

It wasn't made clear if Light is developing this phone on its own, or working with existing smartphone makers. While these prototype smartphones have a fewer number of lenses - and will thus likely be less expensive than the L16 - you probably won't be buying one of these future Light smartphones for less than a grand.

Cameras on smartphones are a much bigger deal than they used to be. It remains to be seen how these nine or five lens systems will be implemented and whether the smartphone's camera will deliver on the result, given it will require the kind of processor which can support such high quality image processing.

Why so many cameras? So even if Light does launch its smartphone with the fancy camera features, you might not be able to afford it.
