Android P Beta 3 released: We’re getting closer

Instead, Google says Beta 3 focuses on "the latest bug fixes and optimizations for stability and polish", which suggests this should be pretty close to what we'll get with the final version of Android P when it launches in the fall. However, there is an update to Android Studio, including D8 as an independent tool.

The Android Developer Preview is available for Pixel and Pixel 2 phones, once enrolled in the Developer Preview Beta Channel which you can do by going here.

Have you taken Android P for a spin yet? Earlier in Android 8.1 Oreo, Google added this functionality, but it was limited to automatic- so if you set a white wallpaper, the navigation panel will turn White, and if you a set a wallpaper with a dark background, it turns dark.

Now, only one question remains - light or dark? However, there was no way to change the theme manually-it was always based on the wallpaper.

The next major version of Android, Android 9.0, is slated to arrive sometime in Q3 2018. For now, you'll need a Pixel smartphone - either a Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, or Pixel 2 XL - in order to join the beta.

Also, keep in mind that this dark theme is not a "true" dark theme, in that it only alters certain aspects of Android.

As it stands, device theme changes the appearance of your app drawer, quick settings panel, folders, Google Feed page, the outline surrounding the Google Search bar and app shortcuts when viewing your recently opened apps, and the power menu/volume level popups.
