According to Sudia, the most important thing people can do to protect themselves from mosquitoes is to remove any standing water from around their homes, wear long sleeves and trousers, and put on bug spray. "Apply it to your clothing and make sure you are avoiding dusk and dawn, especially for mosquitoes that spread the West Nile virus", said Hopkins.

When outdoors, residents are advised to use repellents containing DEET, permethrin, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

The province said it's also a good idea to secure doors and windows with well-fitting screens and to ensure no standing water accumulates on your property.

The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station is reporting higher-than-average numbers of ticks testing positive for Lyme disease and mosquitoes testing positive for West Nile virus in New Canaan.

The Benton-Franklin Heath District works with local mosquito control districts and other partners to help monitor for the virus.

Last year, 30 towns in 6 counties had mosquitoes that tested positive for West Nile.

The virus is typically transmitted to humans though infected mosquitoes, and its symptoms can include fever and flu-like illness. If someone develops any of the symptoms listed above, they should see their healthcare provider for evaluation and care.
