SA eatery makes triumphant return to World's 50 Best Restaurants list

Spain leads the way with seven restaurants on the list, including three in the top 10 - El Celler de Can Roca (No 2); Mugaritz (No 9) and Asador Etxebarri (No 10).

The World's 50 Best Restaurants list is not known for its gender parity.

It was the second time in three years the restaurant, which serves up modern Italian fare in Modena, in Italy's northern gastronomic heartland, has headed the list, entries on which are now as coveted as Michelin stars.

El Celler de Can Roca, serving traditional Catalonian food by chefs and brothers Joan, Josep, and Jordi Roca in Girona, Spain, was the runner up.

The Woodstock-based eatery is among the best restaurants on the globe. This award is given to the chef with the most votes from his or her peers.

Osteria Francescana restaurant, in Italy's Modena, was once again named the best restaurant in the world. Peru's Gaston Acurio won the Diner's Club Lifetime Achievement Award.

It should come as no surprise that the most prestigious global restaurant award ceremony is also the most contentious. In addition to El Celler de Can Roca's two wins, ground-breaking Spanish chef Ferran Adria's El Bulli, which he closed in 2011, took the prize a record five times.

As feminism spiked early in the year following the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the rise of the #MeToo movement, British chef Clare Smith received the award for the best female chef and gave a speech where she highlighted how "women need to clear the path for the next generation".

"For the last 10 years of my career, I've been asked, 'What is it like to be a female chef?' To which I reply: I'm not sure what you mean, because I've never been a male chef", said Smyth, who is chef at London's Core, which was mistifyingly absent from the main list. 26 restaurants on the top 50-so more than half-are located in Europe. This year, only one restaurant from the entire continent of Africa appeared on the list, with The Test Kitchen in Cape Town, South Africa landing the 50th spot.

Last year's victor, Eleven Madison Park in NY, slipped to number four, but goodies like a sturgeon and caviar cheesecake kept it rated the best restaurant in North America.
