Mosquito infected with West Nile Virus collected in Dauphin County

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of Culex pipiens mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, which picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

More than 200 South Dakota cities, counties and tribes will share in nearly $500-thousand in grants from the state Department of Health for mosquito control efforts to prevent West Nile virus.

"The county's WNV Control Program is increasing surveillance and control measures to reduce the mosquito population and prevent the virus from spreading", said Dauphin County Board of Commissioners Chairman Jeff Haste, who oversees the Conservation District.

The first human case of West Nile virus in 2017 was reported on July 20, 2017.

To date, 11 out of 102 counties in IL have reported positive mosquito samples or West Nile positive birds, according to the department.

If you have any symptoms of West Nile virus, the district encourages you to contact your health care provider. But most people infected with this virus won't show any serious symptoms at all. About 1 in 5 people infected will have mild symptoms such as fever, headache and body aches. "We continue to ask for everyone's cooperation in draining all backyard mosquito sources and wearing an effective mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors". Insect repellents should not be used on children under two months of age.

Drain standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, and birdbaths. Mosquito repellents that contain the active ingredients DEET, Picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus work best.

Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good fix. "Bird baths, toys, kid pools, all of that will still collect the water too".

Other species at risk for WNV infection are birds and horses.
