Melania Trump's office defends 'don't care' jacket

Melania Trump has made a surprise visit to the US-Mexico border, arriving in Texas on Thursday to visit the McAllen detention centre and speak to some of the migrant children. He says staff have "a tremendous passion for working with these children" and the center is "their home".

The president had insisted incorrectly that his administration had no choice but to separate families apprehended at the border because children can not go to jail with adults who are being criminally prosecuted for crossing the border illegally.

"We just have a tremendous passion for working with these children", said program director Roy De La Cerda.

This is now a very sensitive topic to many Americans and the fact that Melania wore this jacket to meet with those immigrant children who have been separated from their parents, due to Donald Trump's policies, is very offensive. "I know you house children for a long-term basis".

Mrs. Trump sat alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at a table at Upbring New Hope Children's Center and heard caregivers explain how the children are well treated.

"I'm glad I'm here and I'm looking forward to seeing and meeting children, but first of all let me begin to recognize each of you and thanking you for all that you do, for your heroic work that you do every day and what you do for those children", Melania Trump said.

In signing the executive order he used to reverse the separation policy on Wednesday, Trump cited his daughter and his wife. However, his policy of criminally prosecuting illegal border-crossers remains.

Reporters, TV crews, and photographers secretly traveled with the First Lady and released photos of her visit after the president announced the news. "She absolutely wanted to come", Grisham said. Trump had come under pressure to stop the practice, including from GOP allies and the first lady herself, following a public outcry sparked by widespread images of children held in fence-like structures. The official refused to be identified discussing Trump's private conversations with his wife.

When Melania Trump boarded a plane to Texas on Thursday her jacket gave off quite the message.
