Bound new Volvo S60 revealed

The hybrid engines will come in two states of tune, an all-wheel-drive T6 "Twin Engine" producing 254kW, and a T8 version producing nearly 300kW.

The Swedish brand officially opened its first USA factory near Charleston, S.C., on Wednesday, where it will build the all-new 2019 S60. It will need about 1,500 as production ramps up in the fall, said Anders Gustafsson, Volvo's senior vice president for the Americas. Henrik Green, Volvo's research and development boss, said: "The active chassis and driving modes deliver excellent control and an engaged platform that makes this a driver's auto".

The S60 is 4761mm long, 2040mm wide (including mirrors) and 1431mm high, with a wheelbase of 2872mm. It will weigh from 1,680kg, and has up to 442 litres of storage. The vehicle sports double wishbone front suspension, with an integral axle at the rear. The new US-built Volvo S60 sedan, unveiled overnight, features a range of turbocharged petrol and twincharged plug-in petrol-electric hybrid drivetrains that signal "the company's industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine". No diesel engines will be offered.

Volvo says the S60 will come with two plug-in hybrid variants, too - the 340-horsepower T6 Twin Engine and the 400-horsepower T8 Twin Engine. Called the Polestar Engineered package, it adds improvements to the car's brakes, wheels, suspension and ECU, boosting power to 415 horsepower.

The Polestar Engineered S60 produces 670Nm of torque, and is 0.2secs faster to 100kph than the regular version.

The T5 powertrain features a turbo-charged Drive-E engine providing 250 horsepower.

The newcomer is set to be launched in South Africa during 2019, offering three 2-litre turbopetrol engine options - T4, T5 and T6, the latter also benefiting from supercharging. Every engine option sends power to the wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

Volvo's 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system is standard, and it carries both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The S60 includes City Safety technology that can automatically brake to avoid oncoming collisions with cars, pedestrians, bicyclists, or large animals.

Volvo keep repeating the word "sports" when referring to the new S60 in its press bumf, with boss Håkan Samuelsson calling the new saloon 'one of the most exciting Volvo cars we've ever made.' Strong words.

Subscription-plan aficionados will geek out over the news that the new S60 will also be available with the Care by Volvo subscription plan. Rising demand for those imported vehicles helped convince the company, owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group [GEELY.UL], to expand its investment in SC to $1.1 billion and make plans to hire about 4,000 workers by the time the new factory reaches full manufacturing capacity.

The interior is also shared with other Volvos, revealing a sophisticated design language majoring in minimalist shapes and pared-back surfacing all underpinned by excellent build quality and materials.
