Trump Suggests Singapore Summit Ended North Korea Nuclear Threat

According to the Washington Post, North Korea's definition of "denuclearization" is different from Trump's. Well, for starters, the twosides would need toestablish what denuclearisation means.

Xi met twice with Kim before Singapore and retains a strong influence on the situation - China even lent Kim a plane to get to the summit.

With a handshake that lasted for about 13 seconds, North Korea's Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump on Tuesday scripted history during the first-ever and much-awaited meeting between the two countries. Already, North Korea has criticized the US and South Korea's military drills, saying they're not helpful for peace talks.

A large contingent of Democrats criticized the president and his staff for tentatively granting a number of concessions to the North Koreans, including a pause on military exercises in South Korea and even meeting with Kim in the first place to lend his leadership legitimacy on the worldwide stage. Trump said: "That's true". He also predicted that the Kim Jong and he "will solve a big problem, a big dilemma". "And we have been able, so far anyway, to provide that confidence". He didn't look exactly comfortable strolling around Singapore's tourist spots, surrounded by a phalanx of guards, but he spent more than two hours out on the town, and was happy to have those images published back in Pyongyang.

Where will the Singapore summit lead the US? Many observers say the agreement does little to reduce North Korea's stockpile of weapons. How will this rapprochement affect ordinary North Koreans?

Pompeo, speaking to reporters in Seoul on Wednesday, sought to quell criticism that North Korea didn't make any major commitments at the summit in Singapore. "The only possible path is one of direct dialogue". And why wasn't the South Korean president invited? "Many people in the world will think of this as a scene from a fiction movie", Kim Jong-un was heard telling Donald Trump. Kim and Trump, obviously. Pompeo is also due to meet the South Korean and Japanese foreign ministers.

The Singapore agreement does not detail plans for North Korea to demolish a missile engine testing site, a concession Trump said he'd won, or Trump's promise to end military exercises in the South while negotiations between the USA and the North continue. Having open channels of communication can only minimize the risk of miscalculation.

North Korea is believed to possess more than 50 nuclear warheads, with its atomic program spread across more than 100 sites constructed over decades to evade worldwide inspections. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said, adding that the Trump-Kim agreement is nothing more than a "few sentences on a sheet of paper" that were "very aspirational".

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the USA for its defence.

This year, the spring exercise was postponed so as not to overlap with the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

"I'm going to leave the content of our discussions between the two parties, but one should heavily discount some things that are written in other places", Pompeo said. It can be seen as a concession in exchange for Kim halting nuclear and missile tests during 2018 - and an acknowledgement of China's "suspension-for-suspension" proposal. Why the change of strategy?

Before the unexpected thaw between Pyongyang and the US, North Korea had repeatedly threatened to target US troops in the region. But the North Koreans have expertly escalated and de-escalated tensions to suit their needs over the years.
