Murder probe as hunt under way for killers of Polish man

Gardai responded to an incident at 3.17 am this morning and said they were on the scene within five minutes.

Another woman, aged in her 30s, and two children under the age of six, were also in the house at the time of the attack but were unharmed.

Police initially believed there were four men involved.

35-year-old Mikolaj, known as Nick, died following a vicious attack when a group of armed assailants entered his home and carried out an attack on him and his partner Elzbieta.

Both Mikolaj and Elzbieta were taken to Cork University Hospital, but sadly Mikolaj was pronounced dead shortly after 5:30am.

The injuries sustained by the woman, in her 30s, are not believed to be life-threatening.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Gurranabraher on 021 4946200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. He included the wider community of Ballincollig in his address, saying that their thoughts were with Wilk's family and friends. The auto was found within 6 km by road from the incident at the Bridge House.

Police said Wilk died in the hospital, despite the efforts of all medical teams involved.

Police believe the armed gang abandoned their auto, setting fire to it following the attack on Wilk and his partner.

A vehicle was found burnt out several kilometres away in Waterfall. Police have preserved the scene in the home and where the auto was found to carry out forensic investigations.

The murder scene is now sealed off and gardai are continuing their house-to-house inquiries.
