Grandma arrested for driving with kids in dog kennels

A Memphis woman was arrested over the weekend after she allegedly placed her grandchildren in dog kennels during a vehicle trip across the state, police said.

According to police, the children were spotted Saturday afternoon in the 3700 block of Elvis Presley Blvd. near Graceland.

Police say the 62-year-old woman was videotaped by a concerned citizen as she let the kids out. She seems like a nice lady.

Cheeks told police that she traveled with the children in the kennel from Collierville to Whitehaven because there was no room for them in the auto.

Police in Tennessee say a woman, identified as Leimome Cheeks, was charged after mobile phone video emerged of the incident.

State child welfare officials are "now involved and investigating", a spokesman told the Appeal.

Neighbors of Cheeks have spoken to local news outlets about the weird and abusive treatment.

Cheeks told police she drove from Whitehaven to Collierville with the 7 and 8-year-old children in the kennels.

One neighbor told Local 24 it was "very sad because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot". The temperature in Memphis on Saturday got up to 95 degrees. She said they were later allowed to ride in the backseat. I only met her like once maybe twice.

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday at 9 a.m. Another neighbor told Fox 13 Cheeks "loves her grandkids" and that they were "always outside playing with the dogs and stuff".

Cheeks was being held Sunday in the Shelby County Jail.
