Arsenal ready to pay £26m to sign Unai Emery's target Lucas Torreira

Arsenal have signalled they will pay the €25m release clause of Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, piling the pressure on Napoli to do the same.

The 22-year-old Uruguay worldwide, has emerged as a preferred option for new Gunners boss Unai Emery, who wants a defensive midfielder brought in before next season.

According to Football Italia, Gli Azzurri had agreed to pay the €25 million release clause for the Uruguayan global and were in advanced stages of contract negotiations, when Arsenal made a competing bid.

But Osti sent a message to prospective bidders on Sunday, ensuring they realise Torreira has a release clause in place.

The Uruguay midfielder has impressed club scouts with his displays for club and country and Arsenal have opened talks with the Serie A side about a summer switch to England. Until now, Torreira has made just three substitute appearances for the national team but Unai Emery's are wary that the midfielder's valuation may rise next month with a strong World Cup showing.

Jones mentioned the recent free signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner and an agreed deal to sign defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund, said to cost around £16 million, which will be confirmed in July.
