Robert De Niro yells 'F--k Trump' at Tony Awards

Andrew Garfield won the first prize of the night for his role in Angels in America and dedicated the prize to the LGBTQ community: "We are all sacred and we all belong".

De Niro appeared on stage at New York's Radio City Music Hall to introduce rocker and Tony Awards performer Bruce Springsteen.

"Harry Potter", a record-setting $69-million two-part production set 19 years after the last of J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels about the boy wizard, won a total of six Tonys including best new play and best director. The 82-year-old star of her show, the veteran British actress and government official Glenda Jackson, also found herself on the winner's podium at Radio City Music Hall. The show went on to win best musical revival, beating "My Fair Lady" and "Carousel". Also shut out was "Frozen, " the stage adaptation of the blockbuster Disney film.

Stachel, 26, is making his Broadway debut in "The Band's Visit", which stars Tony Shalhoub ("Monk") and the rising star Katrina Lenk. The musical is about the interactions among Arabs and Jews when a snafu causes musicians in an Egyptian police band to become stranded overnight in a village in the Israeli desert. "Mean Girls" won nothing and "SpongeBob SquarePants" got only one for best set design.

Ari'el Stachel, the California-born son of an Israeli-Yemeni father and an Ashkenazi mother from NY, won the award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance as a romantic Egyptian trumpeter in "The Band's Visit".

John Tiffany accepts the award for Best Direction of a Play for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Parts One and Two.

As previously announced, Bruce Springsteen will make a rare television appearance, performing live on the show, and will receive a Special Tony Award for his ongoing engagement, Springsteen on Broadway.

Among those tapped as Tony Awards presenters are Oscar victor Robert DeNiro, Grammy champ Billy Joel and Kennedy Center honoree Mikhail Baryshnikov.

In her acceptance speech, telling Tony hopefuls to be true to themselves, Mendez said that when she had first moved to NY, she had been told she would need to change her name. She concluded: "To all the artists out there, be your true self and the world will take note". "I am part of a cast of actors who never believed they'd be able to do that".

Later, Tony Awards hosts John Groban and Sara Bareiles walked out wearing beards.
