"The team has been extremely strong in the past at keeping reliability on a high level so that is not a part that worries me, it is more we have seen today a Ferrari that is the stronger vehicle - strong in qualifying, strong in race and at no time we had a chance to fight for the win". Mercedes sent him into the pits early to deal with the issue but unusually out of sorts at a track where he has won six times, he was then jumped during the stop by Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and a race that had quickly become a damage-limitation exercise was proving to be a real struggle.

With the victory, Vettel took a one-point lead over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton in the Formula One standings.

He said the win was special because it came 40 years after Canadian Gilles Villeneuve had won his first race for Ferrari.

Max Verstappen kept close to Bottas as best he could - and later confessed to a little bit of contact between his Red Bull and the Mercedes at the start, shrugging it off with, "That's racing, isn't it?"

"I think this is a major wake-up call for every member of the team", he said.

"After a long stretch here without a Ferrari win, I looked around and the people are so very happy". "Everybody needs to assess how to improve performance".

Montreal's Lance Stroll, in his home race, made a spectacular impact in his Williams, but not the one for which he would have wished, crashing out in stunning style and sending Toro Rosso's Brendon Hartley into the air as well.

Four-time world champion Hamilton has had six poles and six wins overall in Canada and arrived seeking a record-equalling seventh victory.

Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda said Ferrari had out-performed his team. "Gilles Villeneuve, the favourite driver of Enzo Ferrari".

It meant Hamilton, along with Valtteri Bottas and the Force India/Williams drivers, remained with their original spec engines. "Sorry mate, gutted", said his McLaren engineer.

"It could get a lot worse". He had lost two seconds and Vettel, turning the screw, responded with a fastest lap before cruising to a crushing victory. That might provide an internal headache for Red Bull, a team that has been known for financially rewarding its drivers for claiming the fastest lap of the race. After arriving in Montreal, Verstappen half-jokingly threatened to head-butt any reporter who asked about the crashes. He earned his first Formula One points with a ninth-place finish at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve past year.

The day was less positive for two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who was celebrating his 300th Formula One race.
