Dwane Casey to Coach Pistons

Dwane Casey to Coach Pistons

The Pistons have hired former Toronto Raptors head coach Dwane Casey.

According to the report, Casey will receive a five-year deal.

Detroit will operate with an All-Star frontcourt of Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan, but will have to figure out the pieces around them in hopes to take the team into playoff contention.

The Raptors were the first seed in the Eastern Conference this year, finishing with a record of 59-23. His departure from Toronto was a hard decision for Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and Casey being favored for a new role quickly is hardly surprising, although he could have stayed at home earning $6.5 million and waiting for another opportunity next summer.

"I am excited and honored to join the Detroit Pistons, a franchise with a championship history and a roster that is ready to win now", Mr. Casey said.

The Pistons move means that there's only one vacant head coaching job left in the National Basketball Association - with the Raptors. He is meeting players in Los Angeles, where many work out in the off-season. Under Casey, the Raptors reached the Eastern Conference Finals during 2015-16 season, but away from that feat, his teams were swept three times in the postseason, including two years in a row by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Casey is the front-runner for the NBA's coach of the year award to be presented later this month.

Casey is well-respected by players across the league, but was this the correct hire by Gores and the Pistons?

Under Casey, the Raptors won four Atlantic Division titles and advanced to the playoffs in five consecutive seasons. Having spent many hours with Dwane over the last few weeks, I'm confident he is the right person to get us to the next level.
