A community fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, more than 400 Relay for Life events were held across Canada previous year, mostly in larger urban centres, which was the reason behind the Lockeport Relay for Life event being started in 2012. Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement is the world's largest fundraising event to save lives from cancer.

All of this happened at the same time Hart was headed to Shepherd University to participate in the school's annual Relay for Life.

Previous year alone, the lodge has hosted 32 patients and guests from the county, whom stayed 218 nights total.

It is a way to honor survivors and those who have lost the battle to cancer. "I've been involved with this event for 15 years, and they amaze me every single year".

Survivors stand out among other participants by wearing signature purple shirts.

Cade was just one of the many cancer survivor's at this year's relay. I had someone who invited me. All the proceeds from fundraising monies go straight to the American Cancer Society to help those battling the disease.

In addition to the survivor lap, the event included a silent auction, fundraising awards, speakers and the luminaria ceremony, in which participants honor those who are now battling cancer and those who have died from cancer by turning off the stadium lights and lighting tealight candles inside decorated paper bags.

On Friday, Relay for Life Wausau kicked off at Marathon Park.

"It's very quiet and very memorable and very somber", Zeller said. More than 500 Luminaria have been dedicated this year. "It's just one big family".
