"This India of our dreams (New India) will be single-use plastic free", said Vardhan amid applause from the gathering here at Vigyan Bhawan where the PM later emphasised on India's commitment towards protecting environment. "At the same time, it will instil a sense of responsibility among people to increase their efforts and play a role in contributing towards preserving the environment for the future generations".

Till the 1970s, the use of plastic in Pakistan was limited, but this trend started changing in the 1980s, according to International Union for Conservation of Nature Country Representative Mahmood Akhtar Cheema.

The Pope marked World Environment Day, Tuesday, tweeting a prayer: "Lord, reawaken in us a sense of praise and gratitude for our Earth, and for everything you have created".

"On the occasion of the World Environment Day, we declare a national campaign involving the official authorities, civil society organizations and categories of the people", he announced.

Highlighting the menace posed by plastic, he had said that 25,940 tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day in the country with 40 per cent of plastic waste being uncollected, and 60 million tonnes of solid waste is generated in one year. And one out of five plastic bottles is recycled. Almost one third of plastic packaging used globally escapes collection systems, Zero Waste Scotland reports. "Every year, more than 8 million tonnes end up in the oceans", he said, adding that "microplastics in the seas now outnumber stars in our galaxy". This is a threat not only to marine life such as coral reefs but also birds and animals.

Plastics contain a number of chemicals, many of which are toxic or disrupt hormones.
