Miss America is getting rid its swimsuit, night gown competitions

Gretchen Carlson, the 1989 Miss America victor and first former contestant to sit on the pageant's Board of Trustees, announced the Miss America Organization would no longer recognize the swimsuit competition and judge contestants on their physical appearance.

"People actually like the talent part of the competition", she said.

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance", said chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors Gretchen Carlson.

The evening gown section is also being axed, with contestants asked to wear something that makes them feel good and expresses their personal style instead.

Miss America is scrapping the swimsuit portion of its competition for the 2018 pageant.

As a local titleholder, I've never been more proud to be involved in the Miss America Organization. "You're just mad you can't gawk at them like meat anymore", another wrote.

The Miss America pageant is run by a non-profit organization in New Jersey. Carlson added, "That's what we're judging them on now".

The next Miss America will be judged on brains, not beauty.

"We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance", she said.

She sued the former chief executive at Fox News for sexual harassment two years ago, and added that she knows "a lot about change". Instead, they'll replace the swimsuit modeling with live interaction between the judges and the state titleholders. Waring said she and other Miss Americas - they call themselves "the forevers" - were alerted to the switch during a conference call last week.

The changes will be in place for the next Miss America competition, set for September 9 in Atlantic City.

Asked if she is anxious ratings for the nationally televised broadcast might suffer because of the elimination of swimsuits, Carlson said she is not. But I did recognize the significance of that part of the competition.

"Miss America will represent a new generation of female leaders focused on scholarship, social impact, talent and empowerment", Carlson said.

Miss America has undergone a major overhaul in response to the Me Too movement.

Carlson said the organization wants to be open, transparent and inclusive to women who may have not been comfortable participating before.

The new rules also come amidst the #MeToo era, as women have shared their stories and advocated on behalf of victims of sexual harassment and abuse.
