Rockin' Relay: Cancer Society benefit brings hundreds out

The annual Lee County Relay for Life celebrates the efforts to support cancer survivors and the American Cancer Society.

Catherine and her children have now signed up to be part of the Million Dollar Fitness team at this year's Legenderry Relay for Life event to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The objective of Relay For life to unite cancer survivors and also raise money so that others may also claim victory over the deadly disease. "I took more of an active role, too, when my mom was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer in March of 2015". They wanted to hold an event in New Fairfield to fight cancer so they partnered with the American Cancer Society to run a Relay for Life Event.

All funds from the Relay for Life are put towards cancer research and finding a cure. For the last three years, Brownlee has been chair member for the Westman Relay for Life.

Amy joins "Heroes" from countries including South Africa, America and Germany who have been recognised by the American Cancer Society. Her sister, Marie, is a 22-year breast cancer survivor, but Barresi's had two sisters pass away, less than two years apart, from lung cancer.

According to the Relay For Life website, "Survivors and Caregivers are the heart and soul of Relay For Life events". After being cancer-free since 1991, she was diagnosed with melanoma and required surgery that left her numb on her right side. I don't have the energy I did, but here, at Relay For Life, I feel so good.

"The people I volunteer with are my second family and have inspired me to continue to do more", says Shyloh. These are paper bags with a candle inside honouring the memory of a loved one who died from cancer, a patient with the disease or a survivor.

"We [Brownlee, her husband, and son] moved into my Grandma's when she got sick, so that we could help her", shared Brownlee. She was a long-time supporter of Relay for Life. The intense treatment had taken such a toll on her body and mind, she thought about forgoing further treatment and resigning to the fact she wouldn't be around much longer.

Event Co-Chairwoman Kirsten Weidemann noted that each team aimed to have a least one participant walking around the park through the duration of the event, which stretched for about four hours. "But, we got out the razor and did it together", said Brownlee.
