Two Sunderland beaches achieve Blue Flag status

Thirty-three per cent have never been on holiday to the coast, and nearly 18 per cent have never even set foot on a British beach.

And 125 British beaches have received a Seaside Award this year - Keep Britain Tidy's own award for beaches that meet the very highest standards for cleanliness and facilities.

Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport, Coun Amy Wilson added: "The awards are national recognition of our bathing beaches as being among the best in the country, and are testament to the hard work of everyone involved in helping them stay that way".

The Blue Flag certification is awarded to recipients every year. This three mile stretch of sea and sand is a highlight of many people's summer holiday.

The announcement means the South West retains its title as Britain's beach capital, having won more awards than anywhere else in the country.

"This award wouldn't have been achieved without our dedicated Beach Management Team, alongside the businesses and concessions that we work in partnership with". Shanklin, Seagrove and Springvale beaches have today (Thursday) been awarded Seaside Awards, but Sandown does not appear on the list. The City of Barrie Marina has been Blue Flag certified since 2015.

The City of Barrie Marina is one of nine marinas and 27 beaches in Canada to be Blue Flag certified this year.
