Tabulating of primary election ballots under way

Gale said he does think there is the potential to double the turnout in the general election due to major state races, contested county offices and 17 of 24 contested legislative races on the ballot.

But, it is also down from the 17,203 registered primary voters in 2014, the last midterm election year.

The final list of candidates for the November 6 General Election won't be finalized until after June 30 as that is the deadline for candidates to be placed on the ballot for posts not already filled by a Republican or Democrat candidate. It is too late to mail ballots.

Elections officials in several counties reported higher than average voter turnout, particularly among Democratic voters. However, the primary that you vote in will be a public record (but not how you voted).

The Butler Radio Network will be airing live election return coverage beginning at 9 p.m. on WISR 680AM and WBUT 1050AM and online. That year saw 12,188 Democrats, 5,479 Republicans and no Libertarians, as the third party was not certified for the primary.

Early voting and Election Day voting are being held at the Candler County Recreation Department's Jack Strickland building.

Secretary of State John Gale had predicted a statewide turnout of 28 percent of registered voters. If one person receives more than half the votes on the first ballot, that candidate wins. A primary election can be the deciding election for an office if there is no other competition seeking election for that office.

"You always try to make excuses [for poor turnout], like we just went through a county race", said Vidor Mayor Robert Viator, who won a 2019 Orange County Commissioners seat in that March 6 primary.
