Shocking Scenes As Masked Intruders Attack Sporting Lisbon Players

The Primeira Liga side have "vehemently condemned" a section of their own supporters who attacked players and staff at the club's training facility, injuring forward Dost and others in the process.

It has been claimed that Battaglia's agents are now ready to work to terminate their client's contract with the club and he could leave Sporting Lisbon during the upcoming window.

Sporting Lisbon have confirmed that a number of its players and staff were assaulted by a group of fans who forced their way into the club's training ground on Tuesday.

"It was a distressing situation and we are all shocked", the striker, with 27 league goals to his name this season, told Dutch news website Algemeen Dagblad.

Sporting's training center is in Alcochete, about 20 kilometers south of Lisbon.

The incident occurred just days after goalkeeper Patricio's late mistake caused Sporting to lose 2-1 at Maritimo, an error that ultimately caused the club to miss out on qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The players were preparing for the Portuguese Cup final against Aves on Sunday.

The horrific incident left Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa "worried by the image this projects of Portugal to the world".

Portuguese police have made 23 arrests, according to the government.

The Portuguese league also expressed revolt, stating, "The violent acts [that] the players and coaching staff of Sporting were subject to today". The assailants were labelled "criminals, not football fans" by the Portuguese league.

Several hundred Sporting fans made their way to the team's Alvalade stadium on Tuesday night to lend their support to their stricken team's players and management.

Club president Bruno de Carvalho last month threatened to suspend almost the entire first-team squad after becoming involved in a public spat with the players over their performance in a Europa League match against Atletico Madrid.
