Multiple injuries were reported after a school bus carrying students was involved in a serious crash on a New Jersey highway Thursday morning, CBS New York reports. It was also sheared off its undercarriage and a piece of the front end of the bus with the steering wheel visible was lying on top of the guardrail separating the highway from the median.

The bus was from East Brook Middle School in Paramus, New Jersey, Police Chief Ken Ehrenberg said, according to WPVI-TV.

A red dump truck with severe front end damage was also seen at the scene. Some eastbound lanes reopened about an hour later, although the westbound lanes remained closed.

State police say that an unknown number of children were on the bus and multiple victims have been sent to the hospital. "It doesn't take long to look at this accident scene and to understand how horrific the injuries would be". Expect heavy traffic and delays on Route 46, Mount Olive police say. Morristown Medical Center confirmed it was receiving patients but a spokesperson did not know how many were expected to arrive at the hospital.
