How to set up Gmail offline mode

Google announced its new Gmail web app back in late April, and this week it picked up native offline support, thanks to its use of Progressive Web App (PWA) technologies.

At the bottom, click Advanced.

The new version which is off by default, "just works" from instigation, unless you turn it off, allowing you to work through emails just as if you were using a desktop client like Outlook.

Offline users are limited to storage space available to Chrome, which Google said is usually only a fraction of the total free space on a drive.

It does sound like a pretty nifty feature to have, especially if you're someone who is bad at replying promptly, so do keep an eye out for these reminders if you are using Gmail. After switching to new Gmail, go to Settings and selected Offline from the menu and then Enable offline mail from the options. The offline mode is available for Chrome users only.

Click on the gear icon below your user portrait. Knowing it's there, however, could help you make the most of time you might otherwise not be able to get work done, though.

Under "Privacy and security", click Content settings. When users choose to keep it, the data will not be deleted from the computer once they sign out of their Google account.

Once you have selected the best settings for you, click save and you can now use Gmail offline.

On the Offline menu click Enable Offline Mail and you'll see a screen with several options on it (Figure C).

Before going offline, open Gmail in Chrome so that Gmail is already loaded.

Go to the settings page where you will find an option for "Offline". Messages sent while offline will be stored in a new Outbox folder until you're online again.

Under "All cookies and site data", click Remove all. Second, you'll need to update your Gmail experience to the "new Gmail" before getting the option to switch to offline mode.
