Golf Program Receives Academic Honor

Five Penn State teams have earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award for posting elite scores in the most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) compilation, including three of the Nittany Lions' most recent NCAA Championship squads.

The University of CT men's basketball, women's cross country, field hockey, men's golf, men's hockey, men's tennis and women's tennis teams were honored on Wednesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

In order to earn the flawless 1.000, each program posted ideal single year scores of 1.000 for the academic years of 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017.

Volleyball is among the 85 teams that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year of the 13-year old program and an even more select group that has never lost an April point.

Other Zag programs honored: baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's golf, men's soccer, women's tennis, men's track and women's track (indoor and outdoor track are combined).

This latest honor marks the third-straight season that the Rebel women's tennis team has earned the public recognition, as well as the sixth time overall. Swimming and diving was one of five programs, a school record, recognized in 2011-12 joining men's golf, men's tennis, gymnastics and volleyball. "Their support is vital to student success". Seven national championship teams so far this year have earned Public Recognition Awards. "Our Student-Athlete Success Program continues its outstanding work with all 24 of our sports and I want to thank them for their tireless dedication to our student-athletes". The field hockey team, led by coach Char Morett, has received an NCAA Public Recognition Award nine times. The spring academic semester which just concluded was the 30th consecutive semester in which Wildcats student-athletes maintained a collective grade-point average above a 3.0, and the seventh straight semester in which the GPA for student-athletes was higher than a 3.2.
