Varanasi flyover collapse: 12 people killed, over 50 trapped under debris

Earlier reports suggested that at least 18 bodies have been recovered from debris after the flyover collapsed. The incident occurred post-noon, and some vehicles, including a bus, were crushed in the collapse, he said. The incident claimed 17 lives while a few more were feared trapped under the debris. He also set up a high-powered three-member panel under agriculture production commissioner Raj Pratap Singh to look into the accident, which will submit a preliminary report within 48 hours.

Most of those killed were in vehicles traveling beneath the overpass, said senior police officer P.V. Ramasastry. According to the NDRF engaged in relief and rescue operations, the number of dead can increase further. He visited the accident site last night and met the injured people in different hospitals. "I pray that the injured recover soon", he said. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of the State is reportedly leaving for Varanasi.

Another flyover near Polytechnic crossing had developed cracks and was closed for traffic for about a year, he said.

The flyover was being constructed by the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation. "Seven teams of the NDRF, comprising 325 workers, have been deployed for the rescue mission", said a government spokesperson.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Governor Ram Naik too condoled the deaths. The concerned authorities are monitoring the situation and all necessary help and medical assistance is being provided.

"Deputy CM KP Maurya and minister Neelkanth Tiwari have been directed by CM to go to Varanasi's Cantt area, where over 12 people died after a portion of under construction flyover collapsed there".
