The Tamil Nadu State Board of School Examination conducts Secondary School Examination and evaluates students on their academic progress through Class 10th Board Examinations and Class 12th Board Examinations.

The Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education was established in 1910, and later after Independence was carved out as and separate Directorate of Government Examinations under the Department of Education, Government of Tamil Nadu. School Education Minister KA Sengottaiyan said that the reason behind not announcing the toppers list is just because of the other students whose percentage affected by one percentage or very little difference in decimals from the toppers, in the result, such students get depressed. The marks scored are considered as valid merit for admissions to various universities and schools across the state.
