Stop attack on Gaza: Lebanese actress appeals at Cannes with placard

Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart flouted a ban on flat shoes at this year's Cannes Film Festival opting for a barefoot fashion statement on the red carpet.

Issa held a sign that read "Stop the Attack on Gaza" as she walked the red carpet ahead of the film's premiere.

Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir led a rally at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday to show solidarity with the 60 people killed in the Gaza protests, on the same day as the opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem.

The Cannes dress code became a controversial topic in 2015 when a number of women attending a premiere were stopped from entering for wearing flat soled shoes instead of high heels. "Does he have to wear heels?'" she said at the time.

Last year, the actress told THR that she found it unfair to force female attendees to be uncomfortable while men had the option to dress however they pleased. This led to an immediate and very vocal backlash against the prestigious festival.

"Things have to change immediately", Stewart said during the 2016 Cannes festival when talking about the heels-only policy.

"I feel like you can't ask people that any more - it's a given".

Although several Twitter users applauded Stewart's rebellious move, others criticized her for what they viewed to be a small gesture in a serious, ongoing debate for women's rights.

Italian model Tina Kunakey illuminated the red carpet in a pair of Messika high jewellery "Madeleine" earrings. "I understand the whole theme with black ties, but we need to allow women to walk without heels".
