Riau Police succeeded in stopping attack: National Police

Police remove the bodies of attackers who were shot and killed at the entrance of a police station in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, Wednesday in this photo taken by Antara Foto.

Indonesia National Police Chief Tito Karnavian told reporters Monday that officers were working on the assumption that the attacks followed a directive from ISIS central command to avenge the imprisonment of former leaders of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah, an Indonesian jihadi group that supports ISIS.

Television images showed what was reportedly the bodies of four suspects lying on the ground. All three incidents involved the children of the three families, who knew each other and studied the Quran together, police said Tuesday.

The string of attacks comes as Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country, welcomes the first day of Ramadan.

Just two days ago, on Monday, 10 people were injured in a suicide bombing as two motorcycles drove into a checkpoint at a police station in the Indonesian port city of Surabaya.

Indonesia's security forces have arrested hundreds of militants during a sustained crackdown that smashed some networks, and most recent attacks have been low-level and targeted domestic security forces.

The coordinated church attack was a sign local extremist groups were becoming more proficient, and stirs concerns about an uptick in extremism as hundreds of Indonesians who flocked to fight alongside Islamic State in the Middle East return home. Another police officer and a journalist were also wounded in the sword attack.

Police shot and killed the four suspected terrorists, he added.

The police said they are hunting for the militants escaping the compound.
