Eight children under the age of 16, including an eight-month-old baby, were among Monday's dead.

Francis didn't single out either the Israelis or the Palestinians in his comments, instead urging all sides and the worldwide community to 'renew their commitment so that dialogue, justice and peace prevail'.

It is now known whether Pope Francis will also hold private audiences with particular bishops.

This is our Christian vocation, Pope Francis continued, to walk as sons and daughters of the light, persevering in faith.

"We are called to receive his splendor" and let one's heart be set on fire, he added.

He also emphasized the right of children to a Christian education and the responsibility of parents and godparents to provide this and to nourish in children the baptismal graces, helping them to persevere in the faith. "Do not be dismayed, for the power of the Holy Spirit enables you to do this, and holiness, in the end, is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in your life".
