Overwatch Anniversary Event Includes Petra Deathmatch Map & First Free-For-All Competitive Season

Beginning on May 22nd, a large event will take place to celebrate Overwatch's two year anniversary.

Kaplan also added that the Overwatch community now boasts 40 million players. It's unlikely there are actually 40 million players because there will be smurf accounts and we don't know if they are counting accounts as "players". Without a doubt, this constant attention to details in the most recent patch and those before it have assisted in giving the game a solid reputation among fans, leading to its huge player base.

Regarding the deathmatch competitive season, Kaplan said that the Chateau map and Petra map will be the maps that can be played on for the mini competitive season.

"Petra is handsome", Kaplan said during Wednesday's Developer Update video. For example, there is a mega health pack in the very center of the map in an area that becomes increasingly unsafe as the match goes on.

For this free weekend, we're making Overwatch's full roster of 27 heroes and 18 maps available for play in a variety of modes, including Quick Play, Custom Games, and the Arcade. There's parts of the map that are great for open, long-range heroes. Players logging during the event will receive a bonus Legendary loot box, guaranteeing one Legendary item. Past seasonal items will also be available in any loot box earned over the course of the Overwatch Anniversary event.

Overwatch's anniversary event begins on May 22 and ends on June 12.
