MACC wanted to probe 1MDB Najib link but the AG said no

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says he will be the prime minister for up to two years and then play "a role in the background".

The Swiss attorney general's office said on Tuesday that federal prosecutors were seeking quick talks with Malaysian counterparts on how to press forward with the investigation. "There will be no special powers given except as are given to ministers or deputy ministers or deputy prime ministers", Mahathir said.

Mahathir on Saturday stopped Najib from leaving the country, and sacked the attorney general who had cleared him of involvement in a multi-billion-dollar corruption scandal.

"Once investigations are carried out, then we can suspend him and prevent him from leaving the country", he said.

The ousted prime minister has denied any wrongdoing.

Senior officials at scandal-plagued state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) withheld information from its board and took some decisions without the board's approval, according to a Malaysian government audit of the fund that was declassified on Tuesday. Other state-linked companies will also be required to channel their earnings to the fund, as long-term savings to the country. The police action followed a complaint lodged by two leaders of the youth wing of Mahathir's political party, Bersatu. The police report of the complaint, reviewed by Reuters, alleges that vans emblazoned with the logo of the department of the prime minister and cabinet delivered boxes for 50 Birkin handbags to Pavilion Residences on Thursday evening. The report alleged that the boxes showed the name of the consignee as Rosmah Mansor.

Yet rather than give up, Anwar worked from his prison cell to forge a new opposition alliance by ending the two-decade feud with Mahathir - a gamble that paid off when the alliance won May 9 polls and ended the National Front's 60-year grip on power.

Both police officers said investigators were not primarily interested in the luxury items but were chasing documents that could be vital for investigations into Najib's administration.Kuala Lumpur's police chief and an official police spokeswoman did not respond to requests for comment.Najib said earlier on Saturday that he was going overseas for a week to rest, but just minutes later the Department of Immigration announced that he and his wife had been barred from leaving the country.

Low, a friend of Najib's stepson Riza Aziz, had no official role at 1MDB but USA investigators say he had considerable influence over its dealings and was often in contact with Najib.

"We are investigating as soon as possible money laundering and we have to contact America, Singapore, Switzerland and Luxembourg", he said. He has warned that Najib will have to "face the consequences" if found guilty of wrongdoing.

Malaysia's new prime minister Mahathir Mohamad doesn't intend to immediately step aside once his foe-turned-colleague Anwar Ibrahim is pardoned.
